Welcome |
If you’re planning tours for 2021, July is an excellent month for UK-bound travel. The Hampton Court Flower Show tops the bill for green-fingered clients but for those who enjoy classical music and opera, they will thank you for a customised itinerary based around the York Early Music Festival, the alfresco theatre at Tolethorpe Hall, classical music in Cheltenham or world-class opera in the Cotswolds and at Glyndebourne.
York also make a very good base for have-sketch book-will-travel side trips into the Yorkshire Dales and Wolds that inspired great painters like JMW Turner and David Hockney.

York’s Early Music Festival |
This annual event has caught my ear because, like some of your customers, they may share my love of classical music from the 18th century and earlier. The unique mix of concerts, illustrated lectures, and workshops take place in venues like York Minster, the National Centre for Early Music and other historic buildings across the city. |

Landscapes and Seascapes |
Armed with a sketch pad, a York side trip will take you to places where you can sit exactly where the great painter J M W Turner sat in the early 19th century and sketch landscapes that he would instantly recognise. Then turn eastwards to the North York Moors' coastline for some dramatic and wild seascapes.

David Hockney’s Yorkshire Wolds |
Another routing takes you down narrow by-roads and through peaceful Yorkshire countryside with rolling hills, hidden dry valleys, secluded villages and the big skies that inspired him. If discovering some of his sources of inspiration is of interest, include a visit the David Hockney Gallery in the Cartwright Hall, Bradford which is dedicated to his life and work.

The Stamford Shakespeare Company |
Throughout the summer, they present a season of classic plays under the stars. The theatre is situated in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall (one hour north of Cambridge) where you can enjoy a picnic in the glorious grounds and then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other. |

Classical Music and Opera In The Cotswolds |
The Cheltenham Music Festival takes place in early July each year and is one of the UK’s premier classical music festivals, renowned for presenting world-class ensembles and soloists in magnificent venues. The annual Longborough Festival Opera season also runs from early June to early August and this week they would have been performing Monteverdi’s ‘Return of Ulysses’.

Opera In The Sussex Countryside |
From May to August, the Glyndebourne Festival stages an annual season of world-class opera during which audiences can enjoy performances in their state-of-the-art indoor auditorium. A key part of the Glyndebourne Festival experience is their 90-minute interval and a chance to enjoy a picnic in the gardens or dinner at one of their three on-site restaurants.
