While looking for more exciting experiences for families thinking of travelling to the UK in July/August, I've unearthed a treasure-trove of authentic living history events which are guaranteed to add bubble, fizz and some memorable surprises to their plans.
The list includes jousting tournaments at Arundel Castle and Hever Castle, battle re-enactments at Warwick Castle, the battlefield site at Bosworth in central England and at Battle Abbey on England's south coast.
Elsewhere, costumed guides and participants vividly and dramatically illustrate Elizabethan England at the Shakespeare Houses in Stratford upon Avon, life in 17th century Wales at Llancaiach Fawr Manor near Cardiff and pirates knocking each other about at Dover Castle.
As part of a rail-based programme between London and Edinburgh, there are Vikings in York, the outstanding open-air museum at Beamish and legends coming to life during outdoor, live performances of Kynren, both from a Durham base and the Clash of Romans as they celebrate the 1900th anniversary of the building of Hadrian's Wall. And there's more where that came from, if you know where to look!
The tricky bit is piecing it all together as a profitable proposition which is where my 40 years of operational experience plays its part. Intrigued? Check out the link to this week's Britain Insider column. |
