This week, I'm introducing you to the largely undiscovered, rural county of Suffolk, located to the east of the route from London, Cambridge and points north and two hours from LHR, central London with the Harwich cruise terminal on its coast. Its gently rolling landscape conceals ancient off the beaten track villages of pink-washed cottages, timber-framed moated houses, 16th century pubs and grand medieval churches which many visitors yearn to see but which are rarely included in many itineraries.
It is also where I was born and writing this week's Britain Insider column has brought back many happy childhood memories of a corner of England that remains largely unchanged. This week's Read More will take you back to medieval England as I take a closer look at some of these remarkable places as well as highlighting some American connections with Suffolk and Dick Francis' connections with Newmarket, the spiritual home and capital of British horseracing.
Next week, I'll reveal more about Suffolk for those interested in Living History, Castles and Gardens and how it inspired the artists John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough and the composer Benjamin Britten. |
